You’ve heard the term “mindfulness” and heard it helps with everything from stress to relationships to health. But what is mindfulness really?
For one thing, it’s a practice just like anything else. It’s a great thing to integrate into your life to promote wellbeing.
Mindfulness and Meditation go hand in hand but don’t need to be used together at all. Mindfulness is noticing your thoughts and actions with more awareness and being present and focused while doing so. That’s it in a nutshell.
Meditation on the other hand is dedicated time set aside to relax your mind, anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours! You sit quietly, close your eyes and just focus on your breath, letting any thoughts that come into your mind float on by like a cloud. It’s easiest to start with short guided meditations to practice, which can be found on YouTube for free. No need for fancy apps.
Another great way to be mindful is to do a mindfulness walk, or mindfulness tea break or shower. Set the intention to be mindful of every feeling, sensation and thought during these activities.
What does the tea feel like when you’re drinking it?
How does the water of the shower feel as it cascades down your body?
Or, how do your feet feel every time they hit the pavement? These are all ways to be mindful while doing an activity. It’s intentionally paying attention, not zoning out.
Hope this helps you start a mindfulness practice. It is such a great way of reducing stress.
